VFC Update
March 1st, 2011
Dear Members, As you are all well aware by now the Riverside County Fire Department along with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF or CAL-Fire) has lobbied, pushed, and obtained the implementation of the "new" Volunteer Reserve Firefighter Program.
Unfortunately for most of the Volunteer Firefighters in Riverside County the "bill of goods" sold was simply that, a bill of goods! Promises were big, the hype was great, and of course the goal was lofty. In the end though, all the "marketing" could not overcome the truth of the program, and that is the elimination of the Volunteer Firefighter Program as we KNEW of it.
For many months, the Volunteer Firefighters Association of Riverside County sought to fight, then align, then compromise with the program. Many well intentioned efforts were made, and yes, some compromise was achieved. Of course that is like needing a home run in the bottom of the 9th and getting only a single, it didn't do much.
It was made very clear at the 11/8/10 meeting held in Riverside that the current membership was very indecisive on how to move forward with this new "proposal", even the VFA Board was divided on how to proceed. So, here we are, 4 months later, and still nothing.
Well a new dawn has come.....stay tuned to this site for updates, and more information on how you, as an individual Volunteer Firefighter, and you as a member of a Volunteer Fire Company (VFC) in this Riverside County should proceed forward with the donation of equpiment, money, and what to do for the immediate future.
Till then folks...keep the faith, don't give up, and most importantly..... DO NOT DISBAND/SHUT DOWN YOUR VFC!!
Stay Safe.
