There have been several questions lately concerning the use of the SFM Certified Volunteer Firefighter checklist and Squad Driver Training. Because the Certified Volunteer FF checklist has not been revised by the SFM since it's inception in 1977 the training bureau has decided that they will no longer use or process these checklists (including the 2 page bridge to SFM FF-1) to certify volunteer training. For volunteers that have completed a SFM certified fire academy the procedure to reach SFM FF-1 certification has not changed. For volunteers that have not completed a SFM FF-1 academy and wish to certify as a SFM FF-1 they must use the current 13 page checklist and complete a written/practical test through CTC training. Training Bureau has not yet determined what this proposed testing process will be, so please hang on to your checklists for now.
Squad Driver Training According to Training Bureau, the squad driver matrix is no longer valid. The National Fire Academy no longer offers several of the courses required on the matrix so they cannot be taught. They are being replaced by courses that can be taught and training bureau has promised they will be placed on the training calendar soon.

This is the newly approved training matrix we have been expecting. Please download and read the policy memo to the right, it will answer many questions. Bottom line up front:The old FF-T, FF-C, FF-CL/CPO and FAE checklists are gone effective immediately. Volunteer levels of certification are now as follows: Recruit, FF Level I, FF Level II, Squad Driver and Volunteer Fire Apparatus Engineer.
Some immediate questions are:
New Question: How do we teach the RVC/CALFIRE specific items that are not addressed in the IFSTA manual, like working with inmates or CALFIRE aircraft operations?
A: You can still use the 4300 manuals to teach RVC/CALFIRE Specific items, but the remainder of the instruction is to come from the IFSTA manual.
Q: "What if I'm already a FF-C (or any other level) do I have to re-do the new checklists?" A: No. You are grandfathered into the equivalent position in the new matrix. You must meet the qualifications of the next level in order to advance.
Q: "I'm in the middle of my FF-T checklist, do I continue?" A: We must use common sense here. If a volunteer is 60% or more done with a checklist, finish the checklist. If they just started a checklist, then stop and switch to the new matrix. Under no circumstances is any volunteer to begin using one of the old checklists.
Q: "Do we still use the 4300 manuals?" A: No. All instruction is based on the IFSTA Essentials of Firefighting 5th Edition.
Q: "How do I get a manual?" A: The department has issued one manual to each station. Some volunteer companies have elected to purchase additional manuals. That is an individual VFC decision.
Q: " Can I get a CSFM Certification using this matrix?" A: Yes. By following the instructions outlined in the CSFM Procedures manual you can earn your CSFM FF I and II certification. Training will be establishing a testing procedure prior to application for CSFM certification. More to follow on this one......
